My name is Onyemaechi Emmanuel Ibenne. My journey into mathematics began as a struggle that transformed into a lifelong passion and career. I did well in middle school, but high school was a different story; I struggled so much to understand mathematics that, after three years, I barely managed to earn a C in my secondary school certificate exam. That experience made me vow never to study any course at university that involved complex mathematics.
However, during the two-year gap before entering university, I decided to revisit the basics. To my surprise, math wasn’t as difficult as I thought. I simply lacked the right foundation and study strategies. Chapter by chapter, I rebuilt my understanding, and soon mathematics became my favourite subject. That decision changed everything. I went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from the university.
I often think about how close I was to missing out on a fulfilling career as a math teacher if I had let fear win; I wouldn’t be here today helping students overcome the same struggles I once faced.
My teaching journey began in 2012, when I volunteered in a rural community with limited access to qualified tutors. Watching students who once believed they “couldn’t do math” solve problems with confidence was exhilarating.
Since then, I’ve taught mathematics at different grade levels and worked with students following various international programmes: Checkpoint, IGCSE/GCSE, A Level, SAT, ACT, OSSD, and GRE. Over the 12 years of my teaching career, more than a thousand parents have trusted me with their children’s academic development, and I’ve helped countless learners build confidence in solving math problems and achieve outstanding results in their exams.
Over the years, I’ve undergone professional training from both local and international organizations, including:
Safeguarding – British Council Partner Schools
Teaching Secondary Mathematics – The Open University
Working Mathematically – The Open University
Cambridge Professional Development Courses – Cambridge Assessment International Education
TEFL Certification (120 hours) – TeacherRecord
I’ve taught math in leading schools in Nigeria - Bereton Montessori School (2019–Present), where I currently teach Grades 10 and 12 math, serve as the School Examination Officer, and previously as Head of Mathematics Department. Bloombreed High School (2017–2019), Jephthah Comprehensive Secondary School (2015–2017). Chokhmah International Academy, and Showers International Christian High School.
My students consistently achieve exceptional results, including 100% pass rates in IGCSE Mathematics (2024) and top scores in SAT and WASSCE exams. Beyond teaching, I specialize in preparing students for international assessments and national exams.
Today, I help students conquer their fears and master mathematics with clarity and confidence because I know firsthand what it feels like to struggle, and I know the joy of overcoming it.
